21 years ago today: Close to 80,000 students and residents in Beijing marched on the streets in response to an initiative that called on “all ethnic Chinese to join a global mass protest”. Zhang Boli made an announcement in his capacity as the Deputy Commander at Tiananmen Square. He revealed that the Command Centre was about to make use of tents they received from Hong Kong donors to set up a “University for Democracy” at Tiananmen Square. In Hong Kong, a record number of 1.5 million people took to the street to stage a mass protest. In Taipei, more than 10,000 university students and residents gathered at the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall to show their support for students in mainland China.
