21 years ago today: Zhang Wei, Deputy Director of Tianjin Economic and Foreign Trade Commission, openly admitted in a party meeting in Tianjin that he disagreed with the speech Li Peng made on May 19. He also announced his resignation and became the first director-level CCP cadre to resign in protest. Zhang Wei was once the President of the Beijing University Student Union and the Director of the Tianjin Development Zone. The Preparatory Committee for an Autonomous Workers’ Federation was convened. At the Central Advisory Commission, its Director Chen Yun called a meeting of the Standing Committee to declare his support for martial law.
