Wang Dan Writes on 19 May 2010:
21 years ago today: At 4 o’clock in the morning, Zhao Ziyang, accompanied by Wen Jiabao, arrived at Tiananmen Square, where he delivered a speech in tears, saying: “I am old and the future is yours.” 10 o’clock that night, Li Peng declared a curfew. The commanding unit at the Square made an announcement to end the hunger strike and to start a sit-in protest. I returned to the Beijing University camp, where I prepared myself to face the most brutal possibility. More details of what happened that day can be found in my book chapter titled “The last night at Tiananmen Square” (collected in the Anthology of Taiwan Essays for 2009, Chiuko Press 2009).
