21 years ago today: The People’s Daily published in bold on its front page a speech that Zhao Ziyang gave during a reception for some delegates of the Asian Development Bank Annual Meeting. The Radio Station for Democracy under the Beijing University Students’ Independent Federation had begun broadcasting. As a result a large group of students and local residents were attracted to the Triangle in Beida. The second issue of the Independent University Student Union sponsored student newspaper News Review had also come off the press. The circulation for each issue was at 1000 copies.
