Year of the Tiger

The year of the Tiger begins tomorrow.

In this clip from “Joy Luck Club”, the mother (smoking a cigarette) was born in the Year of the Tiger. Notice especially after 1:15, how she’s waiting for her daughter protectively like a tigress in the shadows, and the shadows of the venetian blinds make tiger-stripes on her face:

May the departed spirits of the ancient Grandmothers of China defend their posterity against tyranny, like Tigresses in the shadows of China’s memory.
