I have also left a comment at China Digital Times to address the issue about whether the BHP-Rio merge proposal is motivated by BHP's greed.

Lying and cheating isn't "taking advantage of market opportunities."
There's an essential difference between a marketplace and organised crime.

So are you suggesting it's OK for China to lie and cheat in order to secure resources for its economic development (because this is what superpowers are expected to do), but it is not OK for an Australian to stand up and defend her national interest?

The BHP-Rio merger is a highly unpopular move. Many international players are quite happy to make sure that the deal eventually falls through (and it probably will). So you'll be glad to know that in reality China will not be blamed for taking advantage of this market opportunity.

I just wonder whether there is any "market opportunity" for BHP to acquire a controlling stake in Baosteel.

Well can you blame the chinese.they are probably the most powerful economy in the world doing what any economic titan will do to make sure it has the natural resources to do it. If you take a look back at the way the western countries behaved in the middle east as regards oil in the 1950's and got away with it all china is doing is taking advantage of market oppotunities.
